The poster “Deutsche Werkbundausstellung Coeln 1914” was designed by Fritz H. Ehmcke.
It advertises for the first major survey of product design and architecture of the German Werkbund. The exhibition was a national event and Kaiser Wilhelm himself attended the opening. But it was closed ahead of schedule in early August because of the outbreak of war.
This poster is an early example for the “Sachplakat”, which was propagated by the German Werkbund and which focuses on few pure colours, simple forms and a clear typography.
The poster is part of the special exhibition “Made in Germany – Politics through Things. The German Werkbund in 1914”.
