The photographic estate of the Bergs, a family of vaudeville artists has a special place within the exhibition “FOTO | ALBUM”.
It contains this slim booklet that belonged to Lu Berg, who was a musician, acrobat, emcee and dancer on Berlin’s and international stages. She came to be known as the “dancing violin” because she could dance on pointe and play the violin at the same time – quite an extraordinary talent. The opened page depicts Lu Berg in various life phases and might have served as a professional marketing tool for the artist, or just as a personal souvenir.
A video-documentation allows insight into this exceptional family history, closely interwoven with major events of the 20th century. In it, former vaudeville artist Ulla Berg (Lu Berg’s daughter) “narrates” the many photos, albums and souvenirs. The spectator can experience the close bond between photography, speaking and remembering and how essential oral narrative is for photo albums.
The photo album, video-documentation and a number of photographic souvenirs are on display in the special exhibition “FOTO | ALBUM” until April 2, 2018.
