Schuldenhemd ‘debt shirt’

Our thing of the month for February has become part of our collection only recently.

In 2013 Swetlana Schmidt weaved this ‘Schuldenhemd’ (‘debt shirt’) from her late Grandmother’s cut up account statements. Suffering from severe dementia, she had spent her last days in a retirement home, a place she never wanted to be in. “The ‘Schuldenhemd’ unites her financial debt with my personal feeling of guilt in one object. It felt like getting even with her through the tiresome manual work that went into the shirt.”, says Schmidt.

The ‘Schuldenhemd’ was a submission for the sixth RecyclingDesignpreis. The eigth edition was awarded January 28, 2018 at the museum Marta Herford where the designs are on display until April 22.
