This and other posters from the “Berlin 2030 Climate Neutral” campaign were displayed throughout the city in the spring of 2023. Even three years after the referendum, the poster’s message is immediately apparent to many viewers. An initiative used these posters to campaign for the referendum on amending Berlin’s Climate Protection and Energy Transition Act. The goal was to align Berlin’s climate policy with the 1.5-degree target from the Paris Agreement and to achieve climate neutrality as early as 2030. Although a majority voted in favor of the measure, the required approval quorum was not met.
Because of the upcoming elections on September 20, 2026, political posters are currently appearing on nearly every corner in Berlin. These are mostly designed by communications agencies. The posters for the “Berlin 2030 Climate Neutral” referendum were designed by the studio “aufsiemitgebrüll”. This team is part of a broader trend among design agencies that do not position themselves as traditional agencies. They see themselves as partners and initiators who work not for, but with, their clients. The projects that „aufsiemitgebrüll“ takes on lie at the intersection of participation, design, and social discourse. The high level of recognizability of this campaign, and thus of the poster as well, stems from the large serif typeface with its soft, rounded contours, as well as the unusual and striking color contrast in shades of green, red, and blue.
The poster is on display in the current special exhibition “Designing for Berlin. Design from the Academy of Art Berlin-Weißensee” at the Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge.
