Vostra Chair

Thing of the month April is a new acquisition, closing a gap in the museum’s collection: the ‘Vostra Chair’, designed by Danish designer Jens Risom in 1941, type designation 654 W.

With a seat height of 43cm, sitting in it is casual. When Hans Knoll emigrated to the USA, he transferred the licence for this chair to his father, supporting the reconstruction of German production after 1945. It would soon become one of the most popular pieces of furniture of (West) German post-war modernity. Its frame is made from solid beech. The scarcity of material results in the use of yellow iron-yarn for the seat’s upholstery.
